The mobile truck unloader for barge loading allows the operator to directly unload trucks in the Inland Terminal to eliminate the double handling of material. The fully mobile units can be used to load barges and coaster vessels directly from trucks to maximize production rates and minimize labour on site.
Many rates are above year-ago levels despite dropping during the last few months. Rates jumped last year on heavy demand for barge coal that was forced to compete with surging volume in other commodities. The spot market for coal barges is extremely limited. Natural gas prices below $3/mmBtu have again prompted fuel switching

BARGE TRANSPORTATION. Coal-carrying barges move in tows of fifteen to forty barges, pulled by a single towboat of 2,000 to 10,000 hp. A "jumbo"-size barge carries 1,800 tons (1,633 tonnes) of coal, so a large tow can move 72,000 tons (65,304 tonnes) of coal, as much as five unit trains. These large volumes result in significant economies of scale.
Coal transportation rates in the United States decreased for the fifth consecutive year. U.S. delivered coal costs, which reflect commodity and transportation costs, have declined steadily since 2010 (in constant 2017 dollars per ton). In 2019, the average transportation cost of coal was $15.03 per ton, down from $16.07 per ton in 2018.
The third topic is coal transportation. It includes a description of the transport network, the methodology used to assign costs to the links in the network, and a discussion of the geographic, infrastructure, and regulatory considerations that come into play in developing specific rail, barge and truck transport rates.
The 15-barge tow has a total cargo capacity of 22,500 tons, or 787,000 bushels. It would require a fleet of 870 53-foot dry vans to haul the same quantity of freight. But the barge is captive to the river, whereas the truck can travel virtually anywhere.
